The Gran Teatre del Liceu, in Barcelona, Spain, is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. It is the greatest opera house in Spain and the centre of a Catalonian tradition that produced many famous singers including Victoria de los Angeles and Jose Carreras. The Gran Teatre del Liceu opened on 4th April 1847, with a varied programme of symphonic pieces, singing and plays. The second event in the history of the opera house was the opera Anna Bolena, by Gaetano Donizetti. Opera was not, however, the only artistic activity. All kinds of performances were put on in the new building, including opera, dance, concerts, musical comedies, plays, magic shows and variety shows.
