Written by Wayne Hector and Ali Tenant, the men behind Westlife, Boyzone and Damage's finest moments, Madasun's debut album was bound to be a slick collection of supremely catchy songs. Which it is. But the closest Vicky, Vonda and Abby--who named themselves after the 1999 eclipse (mad-as-the-sun)--get to sounding like Westlife is on the power-ballad title track. For the rest of The Way It Is, they avoid casting themselves as the next squeaky clean teen idols or Westlife's opposite number, choosing sophisticated cool over processed cheese. Madasun are to rock what All Saints are to R&B and hip-hop; the perpetually positive pop melodies of singles "Don't You Worry", "Walking On Water" and the big chorused "Feelgood" come not just with the pre-requisite R&B beats and grooves but a selection of guitars that most US college bands would be proud of. That at times they sound like the Spice Girls doing Semisonic, and sound good, is not only a miracle, it's an illustration of what separates Madasun from their candy-coated counterparts; a healthy dose of grit and positive female attitude. --Dan Gennoe
