BIOGRAPHIE DER MITWIRKENDEN
Scott Joplin was born in Texarkana, Texas, U.S.A. on the 24th November 1868, from a mother and father born into slavery, becoming free people with emancipation in 1863. His father was a musical person who actively encouraged his sons and daughters to pursue the music. The self-taught pianist Scott Joplin moved to St Louis in his teens and soon became an accomplished pianist. He was versed in various piano styles but excelled in the then highly popular Ragtime method. By 1894 Joplin was in Sedalia, where he began to write down many of the piano rags played by others, but more importantly what he had composed himself. “Maple Leaf Rag” gave him some success and in effect turned his attention to write in a Quasi-Classical way. He wrote many Ragtime ballets and Ragtime operas, but they were not as popular with the general public as normal Ragtime tunes. His personal life was indeed very hard, his first marriage failed, his only child died and his health declined rapidly. Despite all these personal problems he managed to put together another Ragtime opera “Treemonisha”, which he paid for to see it staged and fail, increasing his health problems in 1915. Scott died on the 1st April 1917 of a debilitating venereal disease. Joplin’s music rags were published and used by many appreciative Jazz musicians in latter years, notably Jelly Roll Morton, W.C. Handy, Willie The Lion Smith, James P. Johnson and Fats Waller in particular were all influenced by Joplin’s earlier work. In 1973 a film starring Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Robert Shaw “The Sting” was a huge success and featured Joplin’s tunes and recordings such as “The Entertainer”, “Elite Syncopations”, “Solace II” and “Chrysanthemum”. This advanced media coverage has given enormous interest to Joplin’s work and its importance in music and in particular Jazz history.
