The combined sales of Silk Road Volumes 1 & 2 exceed three million copies worldwide. These two releases are considered to be the essential masterworks of Kitaro. Commissioned by the National Japanese State Television network, NHK, when Kitaro was still quite unknown in popular circles, these instrumental compositions are in fact the sound track to the TV series of the same name. This television series, exported to virtually dozens of nations around the world, tracks the ancient path of Marco Polo from Europe to the 'Middle Kingdom' of China during the Middle Ages.
