DESCRIPTION
Known primarily as the bassist for The Wedding Present and Cinerama, Terry de Castro was also a founding member of the 1990s Nude Records trio, Goya Dress. She is currently a solo artist living and working among the silhouetted palm trees of Los Angeles. Her long-time collaboration with David Gedge (The Wedding Present / Cinerama) continues as Gedge releases You Can t Separate Light, her second solo recording, on his Scopitones label. NME Journalist Nathaniel Cramp called de Castro's 2009 debut LP, A Casa Verde, a delight and gave it eight out of ten stars. This new project features all original material by de Castro and British songwriter Dean Frances-Hawksley and offers up a diverse set of beautifully crafted Americana / pop. It has been whispered that she could take her place at the table alongside Laura Marling but de Castro likes to describe herself as 'Elliott Smith meets The Monkees with a modern American twist . The album opens with Old Song To Pieces and if a song was a river. you could float down this one in the fading sunshine; the lilting slide guitar and heartbeat drums beg you to put it on repeat. The title track Separate Light has whispers of Fleetwood Mac in their prime. and lo-fi hit written all over it. Backed up by eclectic guitar sounds, distorted violins, abstracted feedback, intricate banjo parts and evocative backing vocals, she wrangles her far-flung friends and former music colleagues. The record features New Zealand guitarist Geoff Maddock (Goldenhorse), Shetland-born recording artist Astrid Williamson (Goya Dress) and Seattle-based producer / multi-instrumentalist, Paul Hiraga (Downpilot). Terry de Castro will be appearing at the At The Edge Of The Sea Festival in Brighton on Saturday 29 August.
