DESCRIPTION
GERALD DURRELL - HIMSELF AND OTHER ANIMALS: This is the story of author and naturalist, Gerald Durrell, the founder of Jersey Zoo and the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Through his books, which have been translated into nearly forty languages, he created an awareness and love of nature in millions of people. Despite his death in January 1995, his life s work of saving endangered animals from following the Dodo into extinction continues through the DWCT. Gerald Durrell s story is told by himself, HRH The Princess Royal, who is patron of the trust, and actor and writer John Cleese. The programme is introduced by broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough. JAMBO - THE GENTLE GIANT: Jambo, who weighed-in at nearly 200 kilos, became an international celebrity when a little boy fell into the gorilla compound at Jersey Zoo. The horror of the spectators turned to amazement as Jambo approached the unconscious boy, gently touched him and then protected him from the rest of the gorilla family. Unique film of the event was shown around the world and Jambo destroyed the King Kong image of the gorilla as a fierce and aggressive animal. This DVD tells us the full story of the Jersey Zoo gorilla family including dramatic pictures of Jambo guarding the boy and how he was rescued. TO THE ISLAND OF AYE-AYE: Bridges that nearly collapsed as they were crossed and ancient ferries which ran a sometime-this-week schedule, were just a couple of the problems which Gerald and Lee Durrell faced on their expedition in Madagascar. They were looking for one of the world s rarest creatures, the Aye-Aye.The plan was to set up a captive-breeding programme in a bid to save this strange species of lemur from following the Dodo into extinction. After weeks of trekking through the rainforest without seeing any Aye-aye the local witch-doctor was called in to help but first he had to talk to his ancestors. TO THE ISLAND OF AYE-AYE won a Gold award at the New York International Film and Television Festival.
