Prince, James Brown, Frankie Knuckles and even Barry White are referenced--or imitated--on New Jersey house producer Romanthony's debut. A studio polymath, he can sing and play guitar like the purple one and programme machines like Daft Punk, with whom he's collaborated on their forthcoming LP. And whether he's doing JB's choppy funk ("Bring U Up") or evolved 1990s disco ("Feel Ya Love", "Floorpiece") there's a live feel to his music, a fraction of a second's human error that lends extra warmth and grace. The strongest material aches for the dance floor with stripped beats and vocals reduced to a chant/mantra to tease a ritual heat from disco. He's au fait with 1980s electro and synthpop, although mapped onto contemporary house, and vocoders his speech into camp pronouncements on DJ culture. A closing track that suggests MC Hammer aside, this is a bold revision of black dance--Zapp, Prince and James Brown neatly reconfigured. --Tony Marcus
