Stratford Johns and Frank Windsor starred as the popular characters Barlow and Watt in the long-running police series Z-Cars and then later in the spin-offs Softly, Softly and Barlow at Large. Reuniting again in this 6 part series first aired in 1973, the pair put their heads together to re-examine the unsolved case of Jack the Ripper, trawling through the archives in an effort to uncover the true identity of the killer.

This six-part TV drama is riddled with conspiracy theories, contradictory information and insufficient evidence. The confusion and difficulty that Barlow and Watt are confronted with, echo the troubles that the police faced during their original investigation.

Told in a discussion based theme and interspersed with dramatised documentary style scenes set in the 19th century, they examine not only the prominent suspects and theories but also delve into the lesser known suggestions, including the Royal conspiracy.
