Dim Stars, Bright Sky, Doe's fourth solo album, is being billed as his first acoustic solo LP, but that bends the boundaries of truth in advertising just a bit; while several of the songs are built around low-key non-amplified arrangements, most notably 'Seven Holes', 'Faraway (From the North Country)', and 'Always', most of the album's tunes feature electronic keyboards, drum loops, electric guitars, or some combination thereof. Not that that's bad; the blend of the acoustic rhythm guitar and fuzzy leads on 'This Far' (not to mention the old-school electric piano sound) makes the most of a solid song, and the splashing drums and Rickenbacker leads on 'Backroom' give the tune a Byrds-ian undertow that's superb. However, if you were hoping for 'John Doe Unplugged', that's not quite what you get. Also, while the cover promises duets with a number of notables, including Aimee Mann, Jakob Dylan, Jane Wiedlin, and Rhett Miller, most of Doe's co-vocalists are little more than glorified backup singers, lending fine harmonies but little personality of their own (faring best are Mann, whose sweet-and-sour harmony on 'This Far' suggests a smoother version of Doe's vocal byplay with Exene Cervenka, and Juliana Hatfield, who proves to be a superb accompanist on her two tracks). Dim Stars, Bright Sky isn't the 'just John with his guitar' album one might be expecting (and hoping for), but with John Doe writing great songs and singing them very well with a top-notch band, only a fool would complain. It's a great album from a great artist, but hopefully he'll take another stab at a real acoustic album one of these days. Was lange reift, wird endlich gut. Der New Yorker John Doe mutierte vom Frontmann der Punkband X in den frühen 80er-Jahren zum Singer/Songwriter des neuen Jahrtausends, und diese Wandlung in leisere Gefilde steht ihm überaus gut zu Gesicht. Die jüngere Musikergeneration hat dies bereits erkannt und gab sich bei seinen Aufnahmen die Studioklinke in die Hand -- im Hintergrund singen so illustre Namen wie Juliana Hatfield (Ex-Lemonheads), Jakob Dylan (The Wallflowers) und Aimee Mann, um nur einige zu nennen. Seine Begleitmusiker, darunter Jazz-Bassist Dave Carpenter und Schlagzeuger Joey Waronker (R.E.M. u. a.) sind nicht weniger erlesen.

Trat man beim wenig beachteten Vorgänger Freedom Is. noch halbherzig als das Kollektiv The John Doe Thing auf, läuft Dim Stars, Bright Sky nur noch unter dem Namen von John Doe. Die musikalische Richtung ist jedoch ähnlich, wenngleich die Produktion dieses Mal weniger auf elektrisch verstärkte Elemente und stattdessen auf einen gepflegten "handgearbeiten" Sound setzt. Zwischen akustischem Singer-/Songwriter-Folk und gebremst-melancholischem Rock mit Country-Einschlag finden sich zehn bitter-süße Songs, die gekonnt zwischen stillen und lebhafteren Momenten hin- und herpendeln und sich im Großen und Ganzen meist um Beziehungsprobleme und den daraus resultierenden Blues drehen.

John Doe ist ein sehr guter Songwriter, jedoch kein übermäßig guter Sänger. Dies gilt vor allem dann, wenn er alleine zur Gitarre zu hören ist. Wo er im Zusammenspiel mit dem hellen Background-Gesang von Aimee Mann oder Juliana Hatfield auftritt, etwa wie in "Forever For You" oder "This Far", hat sein etwas genuschelter Gesang allerdings durchaus seinen Reiz. Dafür, dass John Doe vom Punk herkommt, hat sein Album eine erstaunlich gefühlvolle, verletzliche Aura, die jedoch nie Gefahr läuft, in Sentimentalität überzugehen. Dim Stars, Bright Sky überzeugt mit einer guten Mischung aus entspannten, melodischen Songs und einer guten Produktion mit Ecken und Kanten. Wahrscheinlich John Does bestes Album bisher. --Albrecht Volk.
