William MacLean werd tijdens WO1 pipe-major van de 5th Cameron (Lochiel) Highlanders en wordt gezien als een van de beste pibrochspelers uit de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw. Pibroch is een Schotse muziekstijl die met name aan de doedelzak gekoppeld is. De opnames uit de archieven van de School of Scottish Studies stammen uit de jaren 50.
