In juni 1314 wonnen de Schotten tijdens de Schotse onafhankelijkheidsoorlogen (War of Independence) de beroemde Slag bij Bannockburn. Dat heeft er toe geleid dat Schotland tien jaar later haar onafhankelijkheid terugkreeg. Een belangrijk moment in de Schotse geschiedenis, dat volgens Greentrax een ode verdient, zeker ook met het oog op het dit jaar te houden referendum.
