The true story of one woman's attempt to help a group of Holocaust survivors settle in America. The year is 1944, and US citizen Ruth Gruber (Natasha Richardson) journeys to Europe with the intention of helping as many Jews as possible escape Hitler's persecutions. Thanks to her efforts, a ship is arranged with passage to the United States, but even after surviving the perils of the journey, the refugees face further troubles in the New World.
