Amazon.co.uk When Dave Swarbrick fell seriously ill in the Spring of 1999 and was hospitalised in his native Birmingham, The Daily Telegraph was rash enough to run a premature obituary, causing the fiddler to comment, "It's not the first time I've died in Birmingham". But Swarb, as he is affectionately known to all his colleagues, friends and admirers, is not so easily put to rest. His zest for the pleasures of life--principally folk music, beer and cigarettes--and his superabundant sense of humour have always been evident in his music: qualities that make his fiddle playing so unique, so full of character and so universally admired by folkies and other fiddle players alike. These two LPs (from 1976 and 1977 respectively) see Swarbrick taking a break from the electric folk-rock of Fairport Convention to revisit his pre-Fairport acoustic ceilidh band days. Reunited with old pals such as pianist Beryl Marriott and guitarist Martin Carthy (plus the current members of Fairport), Swarb produced two instrumental albums in which his passion for traditional music is showcased as never before. Although he would later make two more folk rock-based solo albums ( Smiddyburn/Flittin' --as here, both available on one stunningly good disc) and go on to form an excellent acoustic band, Whippersnapper, here the spotlight is firmly on the credit "Trad. arr.
