When Abbie (Madonna) and her gay best friend Robert (Rupert Everett) drunkenly conceive a child together, she asks him if he would move in and raise the child with her. Five years later, with Robert, Abbie and the child Sam having grown close as a family, Abbie meets and falls in love with the banker Ben (Benjamin Bratt) and wants to set up a new home with him. But Robert has grown too close to Sam to give up easily and a custody battle promptly ensues.
