Amazon.co.uk With several particularly fine compilations of defining moments from hip-hop's formative years already available, another repackaging of rap's greatest hits would seem something of a pointless exercise. However, while Hip Hop Assassins boasts many a crowd-pleasing classic, with no sign of hip-hop's biggest hitters (Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Gangstarr, NWA or the Wu Tang Clan), it can claim to be neither comprehensive nor definitive. Instead, these 22 tracks represent key cuts, past and present, from the grass roots. Usual suspects De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Funk Master Flex, Africa Bambaata and A Tribe Called Quest fulfil the necessary legend quota, but it's the less idolised stars KRS-One, Rahzel, Dilated Peoples, Gravediggaz, People Under The Stairs and British hip-hop's brightest hope, Roots Manuva, who provide the choice beats, breaks and flows and elevate Hip Hop Assassins above the compilation crowd. As for inclusion of Tony Touch's "The Diaz Brothers" and old-school revivalists Jurassic 5's "Concrete Schoolyard", they emphasise the point that this is hip-hop at its head-nodding, not star-studded, best. -- Dan Gennoe
