Bleak House - BBC (3 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [2005]
An epic BBC adaptation of the Dickens classic, with a script by acclaimed writer Andrew Davies and performances from Gillian Anderson, Denis Lawson, Charles Dance and Anna Maxwell Martin, amongst many others. High and low life in Victorian London is explored to the full when young Richard Carstone (Patrick Kennedy) and his cousin Ada (Carey Mulligan) are caught up in the interminable legal case of Jarndyce vs Jarndyce. Drawn into a world where the icy and composed Lady Dedlock (Anderson) hides a dark secret, and where their lives will be affected by the attentions of their friend Esther (Martin), their guardian Mr John Jarndyce (Lawson), and the predatory attentions of various unscrupulous lawyers, boarding house owners, and debt collectors, the two young cousins will each meet with very different ends as the case approaches its long-delayed conclusion.
The Old Curiosity Shop [DVD] [2007]
Sir Derek Jacobi ( The Golden Compass, Gosford Park ) and Toby Jones ( W, Infamous ) star in this enchanting adaptation of the Dickens classic, also featuring Sophie Vavasseur ( Becoming Jane ) as Little Nell.
Little Nell Trent lives with her devoted grandfather (Jacobi) in his London shop, a magical place filled from wall to wall with dust-laden treasures. Grandfather keeps his nocturnal gambling activities a secret but is deeply in debt to the evil profiteering loan shark Quilp (Jones). When he gambles away what little money they possess, The Old Curiosity Shop is seized by Quilp as payment and Nell and her grandfather are forced to flee London and seek refuge elsewhere. On the run, and with Quilp on their tails, the pair fall in with a number of colourful characters, some friendly and some villainous.
This poignant film brings some of Dickens’s most colourful, tragic and humorous characters to life with an all star ensemble cast including Zoë Wanamaker ( Doctor Who, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ) and Martin Freeman ( Sherlock, The Office ).
