Terrence Malick writes and directs this romantic period drama set in 1916. Migrant labourer Bill (Richard Gere) goes on the run with his younger sister Linda (Linda Manz) and his girlfriend Abby (Brooke Adams) after murdering his foreman. The three of them find work on the land of a wealthy wheat farmer (Sam Shepard), who lives alone and is slowly dying of a wasting disease. He falls in love with Abby and so Bill - who is masquerading as her brother to improve their chances of securing an inheritance - encourages her to lead the farmer on and soon, the two are married. For a while everyone is happy, but when Abby genuinely begins falling in love with her new husband, tensions rise.
