Ambitious young Cincinatti cop Jeff Cole (Omar Epps) jumps at the chance to go undercover for senior officer Preston D'Ambrosio (Stanley Tucci). Cole is given the new identity of J. Reid and charged with infiltrating the gang of drug dealing head gangster Dwayne 'God' Gittens (LL Cool J). At the same time, Cole embarks on a relationship with attractive dancer Myra (Nia Long), but this begins to suffer as he becomes further embroiled in the role he is playing as Gittens' henchman.
