Released in 1971, the film "Shadow of the Highway" was produced and played by Jiro Tamiya and directed by Jun Fukuda. As suggested by the slogan "A sports car racing north of Kagoshima to Hokkaido, cutting vertically across Japan," this suspense action movie features a Mitsubishi Galant GTO that accelerates on the screen from start to finish. It's a road movie often compared to the classic New Hollywood "Vanishing Point." The music was composed by master Norio Maeda. Dashing piano lines through corners with grace, flowing vibraphone with windy momentum, powerful bass galloping and drums that regularly change speed - this soundtrack is brimming with vitality and contrast: movement and calm, obsession and desire, joy and sorrow. The exciting performance and beautiful melodies fully amplify the appeal of the film. Not only is it a remarkable soundtrack, but it also represents an exceptionally high standard of 1971 "Japanese jazz". The performance of this caliber is rare. Although the exact staff remains unidentified, there has long been speculation that it involved Sound Limited, or perhaps The Third, both led by Takeshi Inomata.
