Die Vierte ist Mahlers durchsichtigste und lyrischste Sinfonie, gleichsam seine Kammersinfonie. Wahrscheinlich auch wegen ihres äußerlich kleineren Formats hat sie eine ganz eigenwillige, widersprüchliche Rezeption erfahren: Auch in einer Zeit, in der Mahlers Musik für das große Publikum international praktisch unbekannt war, blieb die Vierte relativ populär. Heute wiederum gilt sie als weniger wirkungsvoll als etwa die Sinfonien Nr. 1-3 und 5-6. Das ist für mich ein Missverständnis. Das darf nicht sein! Stilistisch ist sie eine ganz besondere Herausforderung, die mich sehr reizt. Sie ist die »Pastorale« von Mahler. ADAM FISCHER
