Das CD+DVD-Set Live! One Great Night präsentiert Steve Smith und Vital Information im angestammten Habitat, wo sich die Spezies geborener Livemusiker besonders wohlfühlt: auf der Bühne eines Clubs.
Aus Anlass des 30-jährigen Bandjubiläums wollte Steve Smith die verschiedenen Schaffensphasen von Vital Information anhand eines besonderen Albums dokumentieren und ihm fiel das Konzert in Ashland, Oregon wieder ein – das Ganze wurde damals synchron in einem Webcast übertragen. So wurde aus dem Vorhaben eines den Werdegang von Vital Information veranschaulichenden Albums letztlich also ein CD+DVD-Päckchen.
Live! One Great Night, die sich in den Billboard-Jazz-Charts bereits auf Position 22 platzieren konnte, ist ein Beleg für die Weiterentwicklung von Steve Smiths Lieblingsprojekt. Seitdem Weather Report und das Zawinul Syndicate nicht mehr existieren, ist es wohl primär Aufgabe von Vital Information, den Fortgang des Fusionjazz mit neuen Impulsen voranzutreiben. Das gelingt so gut, dass der populäre Jazz-Journalist Bill Milkowski gar zu Superlativen griff, um die künstlerische Leistung der Gruppe zu beschreiben: „Es gibt keine flexiblere und diszipliniertere ‚band of killer players’ in der heutigen Jazzszene als Vital Information.“
