Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) war seit 1862 mit Brahms befreundet und begeisterte sich für dessen Musik. Diese Begeisterung schlägt sich in mehreren Bearbeitungen seiner Werke nieder, die so gelungen waren, dass sie das ausdrückliche Wohlwollen von Brahms errangen. Zu den besonders erlesenen Adaptionen gehören die beiden hier vorgestellten Klaviertrios nach den Streichsextetten Op.18. und Op.36.
