'Pins and Needles' marks an important milestone in Chris Caffery's career and showcases the longtime Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra guitarist as a solo artist with a clear vision. Rather than relying on big band names, Caffery presents his own personal, dark, and uncompromising take on heavy metal-raw, emotional, yet meticulously arranged. Overwhelming walls of guitar meet classic metal hooks and dramatic, almost theatrical arcs of tension, as is familiar from the Savatage milieu. Lyrically, the album oscillates between personal catharsis, social criticism, and dark humor, with Caffery handling the guitars, bass, and most of the vocals himself, thereby creating a direct, 'one-man-show' feel.
