Seit ihrer Kindheit ist Shirin Mahmud versprochen. Doch während Mahmud in Deutschland schuftet, soll die Türkin mit dem Landverwalter ihres Vaters verheiratet werden. Shirin flieht Hals über Kopf nach Deutschland. Auf der Suche nach ihrem Mahmud, wird sie mit der deutschen Wirklichkeit konfrontiert und trifft schließlich Aida, einen jungen netten Mann, der sie schamlos ausnutzen wird.

"Helma Sanders hat hier alles riskiert und sie hat alles gewonnen" (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Dennoch: Der Film löste Demonstration gegen den WDR aus, die rechtsgerichtete türkische Tageszeitung "Tercüman" machte unverblümt Hatz auf Hauptdarstellerin und Regisseurin, selbst das türkische Parlament diskutierte über „Shirins Hochzeit“ und 1980 tauchte Protagonistin Ayten Erten unter.
