Das Leben der typisch amerikanischen Vorstadt-Mama Kristin (Toni Collette) liegt in Trümmern: Als ihr Sohn auszieht, um aufs College zu gehen, ihr Mann sie betrügt und ihr Berufsleben am Scheideweg steht, sehnt sich Kristin nach einer Veränderung. Durch einen unerwarteten Anruf aus Italien erfährt sie, dass ihr Großvater gestorben ist. Kristin reist nach Rom und muss herausfinden, dass ihr Großvater Oberhaupt eines Mafia-Clans war und sie sein Erbe antreten soll. Kristin wehrt sich gegen die Rolle, hat jedoch keine Wahl. Mit der Hilfe ihrer treuen Beraterin Bianca (Monica Bellucci) muss sie sich behaupten und herausfinden, was in ihr steckt - doch ihre Feinde lauern überall!
