George Shearing (1919-2011), who was blind from birth, had already made a name in England as an elegant swing pianist, when he became the most successful European jazz musician in 1949 in the USA. Starting from Bebop he found a distinctive sound close to the Cool Jazz with classic attack culture and typical block chord game. In the 1950s, no one conveyed in such an influential way between modern jazz and well-groomed entertainment music such as George Shearing. His 29-year-old quintet in the cast piano, vibraphone, guitar, bass and drums achieved great success, including Shearing's Hit Lullaby Of Birdland from 1952. Jill Marshall's tribute to George Shearing from 1994, filmed on both sides of the Atlantic, presents exactly the music that has captured and changed the jazz world in both England and America.
