Antoine Brisebard ist ein erfolgreicher Autor. Als er von einem gewissen Monsieur Jo erpresst wird, probt er schon mal für dessen Ermordung. Bei der tatsächlichen Begegnung sieht sich Brisebard allerdings außerstande, die Tat zu begehen. Tot ist der Erpresser dann durch einen unglücklichen Zufall aber doch. Brisebard versteckt die Leiche in seinem Garten an der Stelle, wo ein Pavillon errichtet werden soll. Doch bald stellt sich heraus, dass Jo zwar tot, aber nicht der von Brisebard eingescharrte Mann ist .
