Mary Yellan zieht zu ihrer Tante Patience ins verrufene "Jamaica Inn". Die Tante ist mit dem tyrannischen Wirt Joss Merlyn verheiratet. Mary freundet sich mit Joss jüngerem Bruder Jem an und findet bald heraus, dass ihr Onkel eine Bande von Strandpiraten anführt, die Schiffe mit Hilfe von Leuchtfeuern zum Stranden bringt um sie auszurauben und dabei auch vor Mord nicht zurückschreckt.
