Hofrat Franz Geiger verliebt sich im Urlaub in der Wachau in die Wirtstochter Marianne Mühlbauer. Diese bittet ihn nach achtzehn Jahren um ein Musikstipendium für ihre uneheliche Tochter Mariandl. Ist sie Geigers Tochter? Mariandl trifft ihren Verlobten Peter immer wieder mit anderen Frauen. Sie flüchtet zu ihrem väterlichen Freund Herrn Windischgruber. Der ist der Erbe einer heruntergekommenen Bauernwirtschaft. Dort warten halbverhungerte Pferde auf ihren Transport nach Italien. Mariandl und Herr Windischgruber wollen die Tiere retten.
