Franz Liszt begegnet 1847 in Kiew der schönen Prinzessin Caroline von Sayn-Wittgenstein. Die beiden verlieben sich ineinander, aber die Prinzessin ist mit einem General zwangsverheiratet. Ihre Ruhe vor ihm erkauft sich Caroline mit barem Geld. Als in Ungarn die Revolution ausbricht, geht sie mit Franz Liszt nach Weimar. Ein Versuch beim Papst die unglückliche Ehe Carolines annullieren zu lassen bleibt erfolgslos. Können Franz Liszt und die Prinzessin zusammen bleiben?
