Paris, um 1900: Trotz eines Verbots lässt Nachtclubbesitzerin Simone den berüchtigten "Can-Can" Abend für Abend aufführen, denn ihr schlauer Freund und Anwalt Francois hält ihr die Gesetzeshüter vom Leib. Eines Abends kommt es doch zur Razzia, und der sittenstrenge Richter Philipe wirft Simone ins Gefängnis. Doch es liegt ihm nicht nur am Gesetz - er hat sich Hals über Kopf in die hübsche Simone verliebt und will sie auf der Stelle heiraten. Francois schmiedet vor Eifersucht einen Plan.
