Vor allem Gustav Mahlers neunte Symphonie wird als Reaktion auf eine Herzkrankheit verstanden, die bei ihm im Sommer 1908 diagnostiziert wurde, kurz bevor er die ersten Entwürfe niederschrieb. Er war tief verzweifelt und ahnte kaum, wie wenige Lebensjahre ihm tatsächlich nur mehr verbleiben sollten. Die Verarbeitung und Auseinandersetzung mit dem Erlebten und den Themen Abschied vom Leben, Sinn des Daseins, Tod, Erlösung, Leben nach dem Tod und Liebe geschah bei ihm wie stets in der Musik und durch Musik. Die neunte Symphonie entstand zwischen 1909 und 1910 in Toblach in einer Art Schaffensrausch. Die Uraufführung fand am 26. Juni 1912 in Wien statt: die Wiener Philharmoniker spielten das Werk unter Leitung von Bruno Walter. Mahler war bereits am 18. Mai 1911 verstorben und konnte die Uraufführung seines letzten vollendeten Werks nicht mehr miterleben. Willem Mengelberg, der erste passionierte Mahler-Dirigent, schrieb in seine Partitur: Mahlers Seele singt ihren Abschied! Mahlers neunte Symphonie stellt den Gipfelpunkt eines Entwicklungsprozesses dar. Die Kompositionsweise der progressiven Chromatik und die Ausreizung des tonalen Raums werden hier an ihre Grenzen und erstmals auch darüber hinaus geführt. Vor allem die beiden Rahmensätze verlassen den tonalen Raum und weisen deutlich auf eine beginnende neue musikalische Epoche. Alban Berg nannte diese Symphonie gar das erste Werk der Neuen Musik. Das Münchener Konzertereignis vom Oktober 2016 erscheint nun bereits bei BR Klassik als CD die herausragende Interpretation einer der wesentlichsten Kompositionen des internationalen symphonischen Repertoires aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH A great Mahlerian in my view, Mariss Jansons here directs a memorable live account of Mahler 9, drawing stunning playing of considerable intensity from his Bavarian orchestra. Immaculately prepared, as usual, I admire Jansons' masterly control of tempo, dynamic and scale. Beautifully recorded too at the Philharmonie, Munich this BR Klassik release will feature prominently in my Mahler collection. --Music Web, Mar'17
