Joe Pernice first made his name with the Scud Mountain Boys, a sleepy four-piece who played while seated around a small table; the Scuds were so sedate that they slowed down Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Theives" to a tender, somnabulent lullaby and their original compositions earned them comparisons to 1970s middle-of-the-road stalwarts Bread. Pernice carried the same tone through to his work with the Pernice Brothers, and turned up the volume a bit on the self-titled album from Chappaquiddick Shyline. Now, on his solo debut--well, the first album issued under his own name--Pernice mines familiar territory, but with a lush sound not often found in his previous work. The melodies and lyrics are as winsomely maudlin as ever: "So help me Lord, get me stoned again," he sings on "Prince Valium"; "Bum Leg" opens with the explanation that "I got this scar above my eye from a dirty little shit who tried to love me underneath the bridge"; and "Second Semester Lesbian" finds the narrator despairing over a confusing college romance. Pernice may be doomed to remain an obscure gem of a songwriter, a Nick Drake without the cachet, but those who have been turned onto the Massachusets tunesmith wouldn't trade his songs for the world. --Randy Silver
