2004 album from the acclaimed British singer/guitarist, the follow up to his hugely successful Dancing Down the Stoney Road (2002), Although Rea scored a top 20 hit in the U.S. with 'Fool (If You Think It's Over)' in 1978 and has recorded many critically successful albums, much of his best material remains deleted or unreleased in the U.S. Like many artists of his caliber, he's held in great esteem and remains a top selling artist all over Europe. Because of his huge fan base, he has continued to concentrate on that region instead of trying to break the American market. Fortunately, there are still plenty of American fans who are devoted to the man and his music. Blue Jukebox, released on Rea's own label, features 13 tracks and includes a full color 20 page booklet of song lyrics and artwork. Jazzee Blue.

Schön, wenn Musiker wissen, was für ein Album sie einspielen wollen. Der vielseitige Chris Rea hat sich mit The Blue Jukebox seiner Jugendliebe, dem Blues gewidmet. Noch verfeinerter und variabler als auf der letzten CD Stony Road fallen die 13 Stücke aus, die den hektischen Alltag vergessen lassen. Rea, der Engländer mit italienischen Vorfahren, ist dabei eine ganz eigene Variante aus lässiger Südstaaten-Schläfrigkeit mit eleganten Cool-Jazz-Elementen und südländischem Flair gelungen.

Mit "The Beat Goes On" -- nicht zu verwechseln mit dem gleichnamigen Sonny & Cher-Titel -- beschwört er seine Liebe zur Musik. Und gern folgt man ihm dabei zu Swamp-Rock-Anleihen und einer Dr. John-Brummelstimme auf "Long Is The Time, Hard Is The Road", "Steel River Blues" oder "Restles Soul" nach New Orleans. Da spielt der Soul auch musikalisch eine Rolle und Reas Slide-Gitarre, die direkt auf die Gefühlsnerven zielt. Auf dem langsamen, mit Saxofon verzierten Blues "Somebody Say Amen" zieht Rea mühelos an "Slowhand" Eric Claptons Stil vorbei, das gilt auch für das Lied zum morgendlichen Dämmerlicht "Paint My Jukebox Blue" und den Abschied aus der Bar "Baby Don't Cry". Da haben wir schon fast vergessen, dass der erste Drink zur Blauen Stunde und dem entspannten, jazzy Bar-Blues "What Kind Of Love Is This" serviert wurde. --Ingeborg Schober
