Christ Rea is one of Britain's leading guitarist and singer songwriters, and has sold over 20 million albums. He has penned such classics as Let's Dance, On The Beach, Road To Hell and Josephine.
Two years ago he suffered from a life threatening illness that nearly put an end to all that musical prowess. He promised himself, there and then, that if he pulled through he would make the blues album that he had wanted to create through out his career.

Die Doppel-DVD enthält das Making Of von Chris Reas CD Stony Road und Konzertmittschnitte aus Köln und Montreaux. Gleich vorweg ist zu sagen, dass der Schwerpunkt dieser DVD eindeutig auf dem Making Of liegt. Der Sound und die Kameraführung der Konzertmittschnitte sind leider nicht mehr zeitgemäß und nutzen die technischen Möglichkeiten einer DVD leider nicht aus und wirken daher mehr wie Bonusmaterial.

Dafür beeindruckt das 75-minütige Making Of umso mehr. Die Aufnahmen zeigen Chris Rea und seine Musikerkollegen bei der Produktion von Stony Road auf einem zum Studio umgebauten Landsitz in der Provence. Chris Rea bezeichnet das Album als kommerzielles Risiko, da es nicht mainstramkompatibel ist, sondern guten, alten Missisippi Blues enthält. Und genau das Gefühl und die Seele des Blues, die Chris Rea aus persönlichen Schicksalsschlägen in diese Musik gelegt hat kann diese Dokumentation eindrucksvoll vermitteln. Im Zeitalter von Retorten-Boy-Groups und Popsternchen sitzt bei diesem Film ein Mittfünfziger leger in malerischer Umgebung vor der Kamera und konzentriert sich ausschließlich auf seine Musik. Für Rea-Fans, die immer schon einen Blick hinter die Kulissen werfen wollten, sei Down The Stony Road wärmstens empfohlen. --Christian Etterer
