1945 During the occupation of Korea, 400 Koreans are taken to the island of Hashima by the Japanese for forced labour. As this looks like a warship from afar, it is only called "Battleship Island". Under inhuman conditions, the prisoners in the shafts of a coal mine risk their lives daily. Among them are the young father Lee Kang-ok, the troublemaker Choi Chil-sung and Park Moo-young, a member of the Korean resistance. Together with the other inmates, they plan their escape from Hell Island.

Staged with high production effort and star cast, BATTLESHIP ISLAND pulls all the stops of blockbuster cinema. Successful director and action specialist Ryoo Seung-wan (VETERAN) created a festival favourite after historically proven events that broke all box office records in South Korea.
