Polite Robert Elliot (James Coburn) is a respected economist, but also the ringleader of a small group of spy agents in London who work freelance but also the big corporation E.J. Farnsworth (Keenan Wynn) serves with dirty intelligence jobs. Elliot and Farnsworth are irritated by the reportage of journalist Jean Robertson (Lee Grant), who would like to discredit them both as greedy and corrupt - but who is also in love with Robert.
Farnsworth says he managed to nominate Elliot for the post of president's top economic adviser, which would put him in a position of enormous power. But first, Elliot must eliminate the four members of his intelligence team to keep no one alive who can reveal his secret criminal activities. As a devilish mastermind, Robert Elliot hatches a plan to kill all four of his accomplices at once in a night in different parts of London - without even leaving his pretentious apartment once.

The Internecine Project is a clever, action-driven espionage style murder story that gathers a number of B+ stars from the early 1970s for ninety minutes of suspense. Two Oscar winners James Coburn and Lee Grant do that theirs to lift this thriller above average and make it one of the best British thrillers of the early seventies.
