Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) is een getalenteerd pokerspeler, totdat zijn gokverslaving zijn leven begint te beheersen en alleen nog maar tot verlies leidt. Op een dag ontmoet hij de charismatische jonge reiziger Curtis (Ryan Reynolds). Gerry gelooft dat hij geluk brengt en haalt hem over samen een road trip te maken. Al pokerend reizen ze door het zuiden van Amerika, op weg naar een legendarische pokerwedstrijd in New Orleans. Alle hoogte- en dieptepunten die ze meemaken tijdens hun trip onthullen hun ware karakters en motivatie, waardoor een hechte band tussen de twee ontstaat.
