Die Triebwerke sind gestartet. Die Fluggäste haben Platz genommen. Ein Flug wie jeder andere im modernsten Passagierflugzeug der Welt. An Bord befindet sich auch John Berry, ein alleinerziehender Vater und Hobby-Pilot, geschäftlich nach Tokyo unterwegs. Doch es kommt anders: Eine Rakete der Navy zerreißt das Flugzeug, die Piloten und mehrere werden getötet und John muss seine spärliche Flugerfahrung einsetzen um das Unmögliche zu schaffen: die Landung von Flug 52! Unterstützt von Flugbegleiterin Sharon Chandall kämpft John gegen tobende Stürme, beschädigtes Equipment und einen verschwörerischen Navy-Commander James Slan, der nichts unversucht lässt, um die Explosion zu vertuschen.
