Der junge Chanteraide arbeitet als Sonar-Akustiker an Bord eines französischen Atom-U-Boots. Durch sein annähernd perfektes Gehör kann er jeden noch so kleinen Ton unter Wasser identifizieren. Aufgrund eines schweren Irrtums während einer Mission wird er jedoch vom Dienst suspendiert. Als sich kurz danach die politische Situation in Europa dramatisch verschärft und die Welt am Rande der atomaren Eskalation steht, sind Chanteraide und seine spezielle Fähigkeit wieder gefragt. Der Druck auf ihn ist dabei unmenschlich, denn jeder mögliche weitere Fehler könnte den dritten Weltkrieg auslösen.
