Miraculous Mandarin, The, Sonata (Harnadi)

This rare recording of the two-piano version by Bartók of his own orchestral ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin, will delight Bartók fans everywhere. The two-piano arrangement reveals the audacity of Bartók's creative vision with a clarity that is often lost in the popular orchestral version. Filling out the disc is the more familiar 1937 Sonata for 2 Pianos & Percussion, often nominated as one of the greatest chamber works of the twentieth century. Ãkos Hernádi and Károly Mocsári became acquainted as youths when they both studied at the Franz Liszt Music Academy, and for some years enjoyed highly successful careers as soloists and teachers. A few years later, they formed their equally successful duo, performing widely throughout Europe.
