DESCRIPTION
ROCKPALAST is a legendary live music TV show hosted in Germany by the WDR channel. It was first broadcast in 1974 and has become a pan-European television institution. It has its own fan club and online forum, and in four decades, it has become a trademark of quality viewing and listening.
The Pretty Things first formed in 1963 around the nucleus of ex-Rolling Stone Dick Taylor and vocalist Phil May. They had a hit with first single Rosalyn in 1964 and continued to chart in R&B vein before turning psychedelic/progressive. Highlights from the groups history include 1968s 'S.F. Sorrow' concept album, credited as the inspiration for the Whos Tommy. 1970s Parachute LP was Rolling Stone magazines album of the year, and the band enjoyed a renaissance in the 1970s on Swan Song Records, Led Zeppelins label. In June 2009, May, Taylor, Wally Waller, Jon Povey and Skip Alan reunited to receive the Heroes award at the annual Mojo Awards ceremony. Now in 2014, they celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first chart smash hit.
The main feature - Rockpalasts 1998 - show was a Christmas Special from the Philipshalle, Düsseldorf, Germany on 19th December, supporting Van Morrison. It was broadcast across Germany and Europe to more than 20 million people. (This followed another groundbreaking event in September, when they performed their legendary rock opera S.F. Sorrow from Abbey Road Studios, with Pink Floyds Dave Gilmour as guest. It was broadcast to the world via the internet). A long excerpt from S.F. Sorrow is the highlight of this 1998 performance, which is restored and remastered for DVD and CD.
Our bonus 2-shows DVD opens with the 2004 Rockpalast - Crossroads Festival set, featuring covers of Bo Diddleys Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut, Route 66 and a guest appearance by Arthur Brown on a rendition of Hoochie Coohie Man, among many others at the Harmonie, Bonn, Germany. The 2007 show is also Crossroads Festival show, also from the Harmonie. It opens with 'The Beat Goes On', an autobiographical story of their rise, and ends with a lively rendition of their smash hit single Rosalyn. The Pretty Things are still fronted by Dick Taylor and Phil May and continue to put on a stunning show.
