Sure Grand Out

With Myra Melford, Mary Halvorson, Tomeka Reid, Ingrid Laubrock, and Lesley Mok, Myra Melford found a collective of kindred spirits ideally suited to bring her conceptions to life! The idea that innovative, even disruptive art retains ties to history and legacy will resonate with any admirer of pianist, composer, and bandleader Myra Melford, whose enduring fascination with Twombly's art has played a part in each of the three albums she's made with her Fire and Water Quintet, including this latest dispatch, Sure Grand Out. The attraction makes sense: Melford is herself an artist who throughout her career has fused the explosive power of openness and spontaneity with a solid grounding in melody, harmony, counterpoint, and groove. In this band of powerful, capable, and deeply original musicians - saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, guitarist Mary Halvorson, cellist Tomeka Reid, and percussionist Lesley Mok - Melford has found a collection of kindred spirits ideally suited to bring her conceptions to life with the serene beauty and unbounded energy of a Twombly canvas. Writing for this band of heavily pedigreed performers, Melford says, has been a learning process now spanning three albums: For the Love of Fire and Water (2022), Hear the Light Singing (2023), and this new arrival. "The first record was really just putting an amazing group of improvisers together and giving them direction, but not specifying too much of the content," Melford explains. "And then for the second record, I knew them a lot better and wanted to feature the things I love about their playing and wrote music that fit as a setting for that." For this third outing, Melford set out to sustain continuity and momentum, while also stimulating creative growth with new inspirations--including the idea of developing a cellular compositional mode flexible enough to evolve with input from her collaborators, each a formidable composer and bandleader in her own right.
