EDITORIAL REVIEWS
Quartet members inspired by color systems, Rob Mazurek's creations, dedicated to these four artists, watercolor and ink pages, four each, offered to Tomeka Reid, Angelica Sanchez, and Chad Taylor, to interpret freely. A foundation laid for these improvisations in the foursome's forays into Mazurek's music with the larger ensemble and subsets of that group that are still larger than four. Here something becomes distilled. Interaction is direct. Don't bother looking for the artist in the sounds. Inspiration is oblique, transmitting from oeuvre to groove, from eye to axe, from shadow to action. It's in Mazurek's backpack, a range of sparking influences, a ball of snakes writhing together, a quartet of cello, drum kit, piano, and trumpet, reading pages written in hue, written in memory, in spirit, in care of, in honor of. Ways to approach the resounding love, the cosmos, modernism's crooked arrow - Nevelson's black or white towers of wood, the fleeting ephemerality of Tuttle's wall works. Ideas bounced off of a mirror at an angle pointed at a place in the future, the works appearing again as a distant glimmer, their results resultant, resilient, resounding. Something is starting. Something is building. Something is happening. Two more stars in the constellation; two more artists to interpolate: Ellsworth Kelly and Nuno Ramos. Sides of the same coin, two color specialists, one with hard lines, arcs, and truncation, one reveling in the organic. Two more huge lives packed into Mazurek's rucksack. The orientations to Brazil and the States persist, as in domestic life, the magnet of material, of texture, linearity; the play of clarity and blur. The music here has this set of controls - a toggle between the pleasures of melodicism, the space of statement, and a kind of painterly gesture that confuses pink for green. In a good way. John Corbett
