Zwischen 1876 und 1878 entstanden zwei Meisterwerke inmitten einer Welle des Nationalismus, die Europa erfasste. Unter dem Eindruck tragischer Ereignisse wandten sich Grieg und Smetana dem Streichquartett zu, einer in ihrem Schaffen bis dahin seltenen Form, um ihre aufgewühlten Gefühle zum Ausdruck zu bringen und schaffen zwei Quartette mit einer unendlich persönlichen Dimension und einer beispiellosen emotionalen Kraft.
