With its roots in segregation, the blues echoed all the political and social events of the 20th century in the United States, and bore witness to the reactions of Afro-Americans to racism, poverty, hunger, unemployment, prison_ Beginning with the Depression up to the Civil Rights struggle, Jean Buzelin and Jacques DemEtre have put together a series of themes touching on the New Deal, wars, natural catastrophes, elections and all the daily problems confronting the black community which has still not found its rightful place within American white society.
