In 1971 Link Wyler, an actor on the classic TV series GUNSMOKE and an avid blues fan, took a break from Hollywood to record some of his favorite blues artists. He travelled the Pacific Northwest following the Blues legends who were performing there, and the best of those events are collected on GUNSMOKE BLUES. Included is the funky, sultry presence of Big Mama Thornton, who gained fame as the creator of "Hound Dog" but who was most loved for her live performances. The amazingly virtuosic harmonica playing of George "Harmonica" Smith, who stunned audiences with his 1954 "Telephone Blues" and played with the Muddy Waters Band, is also in evidence. Big Joe Turner is captured near the end of his long and illustrious career, during which he incited the boogie-woogie craze of the 1940s, became a hugely influential jazz singer and blues shouter, and was one of the few of his ilk to make a successful crossover to rock and roll with such classics as "Chains of Love" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Classic performances by blues legend Muddy Waters playing "Hotchie Cootchie Man" and "Got My Mojo Working," among others, make GUNSMOKE BLUES a monument in blues history.
