For almost half a century Kassé Mady Diabaté has been recognised as one of West Africa s finest singers. He is a descendant of the most distinguished griot family and his name, alongside other griot legends Toumani Diabaté and Bassékou Kouyaté, is equivalent to musical royalty in Mali. Over his fifty-year long career, he s released numerous solo records and collaborated with Taj Mahal, Toumani Diabaté, Ketama, the Symmetric Orchestra, etc. On the record and on stage, Kassé Mady is joined by Malian kora maestro Ballaké Sissoko, iconoclastic French cellist Vincent Segal, balafon player Lansiné Kouyaté (from duo Kouyaté-Neerman) and ngoni player Makan Tounkara. Kiriké is the third album in a series born out of the friendship between Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal, long admirers of Kassé Mady. Already this friendship has resulted in two beautiful albums, Chamber Music (2009) and At Peace (2012), both released on the No Format! label. A griot to the core, Kassé Mady expresses himself almost entirely through his music, transcribing all of the nuances of the human soul into song. It is this that cements his position as 'the greatest singer in Mali', as described by fellow countryman Salif Keita. There s a rawness and simplicity to it, a stripped back acoustic quality in the recordings, each instrument free from processing, and plenty of room given to Diabaté s fine voice. The sound is often sorrowful, though Ko Kuma Magni is undeniably upbeat, even funky. Hypnotic is the word. --Curious Animal

Kassé Mady Diabaté is one of the finest singers in Africa. He s a griot, a guardian of Mali s ancient culture, but in the west he is best known for his fusion projects. He sang on Taj Mahal and Toumani Diabaté s Kulanjan, an album praised by President Obama, worked with Toumani s amplified big band, Symmetric Orchestra, and performed alongside Cuban stars in AfroCubism. But now he has gone back to his roots, with some crucial outside help. This is an immaculately recorded, intimate set in which Kassé Mady is backed by a classy acoustic band of n goni, balafon and kora (from the celebrated Ballaké Sissoko). The ancient African instruments are joined, sometimes surprisingly, by delicate cello work from producer Vincent Segal; but from the slinky Ko Kumi Magni to the stately Hera, the quietly powerful and soulful vocals always dominate.
