Development of the tank AMX 30/105 began in 1956 when a team of French, German and Italian experts elaborated the specifications for a standard European tank.
The AMX 30/105 was first put into service in 1967. Equipped with a 105 mm automatic canon, it progressively replaced the American M47 used by the French Army.
The 503 regiment based at Mourmelon was the first to be re-equipped, followed by the 501 based at Rambouillet. The regiments based in Germany followed as vehicles became available.
