The Sherman is the most popular American tank produced during the Second World War: Nearly 55,000 copies are produced in very varied versions. The medium tank M4 Sherman formed the backbone of the Allied armoured force. The five main variants of M4 to M4A4 differ mainly in the type of body, the barrel, and the engine used. The M4A2, are powered by a General Motors diesel engine with a capacity of 13.7 litres, the GM 6-71. Although equipped with a 75mm gun outclassed by the panzers, the M4 compensates for this imbalance by its mobility, its reliability and above all its numerical superiority. The Alman standard tank will be used on all fronts until the end of the conflict. He played a major role during the D-Day 1944 and during the Battle of Normandy.
